Coupling physics and biogeochemistry thanks to high resolution observations of the phytoplankton community structure in the North-Western Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Marrec, Pierre; Gregori, Gerald; Doglioli, Andrea M.; Dugenne, Mathilde; Della Penna, Alice; Bhairy, Nagib; Cariou, Thierry; Nunige, Sandra Helias; Lahbib, Soumaya; Rougier, Gilles; Wagener, Thibaut; Thyssen, Melilotus.
Fine-scale physical structures and ocean dynamics strongly influence and regulate biogeochemical and ecological processes. These processes are particularly challenging to describe and understand because of their ephemeral nature. The OSCAHR (Observing Submesoscale Coupling At High Resolution) campaign has been conducted in fall 2015 in which, a fine-scale structure in the North Western Mediterranean Ligurian subbasin was pre-identified using both satellite and numerical modeling data. Along the ship track, various variables were measured at the surface (temperature, salinity, chlorophyll-a and nutrients concentrations) with ADCP current velocity. We also deployed a new model of CytoSense automated flow cytometer (AFCM) optimized for small and dim cells,...

Mediterranean nascent sea spray organic aerosol and relationships with seawater biogeochemistry ArchiMer
Freney, Evelyn; Sellegri, Karine; Nicosia, Alessia; Trueblood, Jonathan T; Rinaldi, Matteo; Williams, Leah R; Prévôt, André Sh; Thyssen, Melilotus; Gregori, Gerald; Haëntjens, Nils; Dinasquet, Julie; Obernosterer, Ingrid; Van Wambeke, France; Engel, Anja; Zancker, Birthe; Desboeufs, Karine; Asmi, Eija; Timmonen, Hilka; Guieu, Cécile.
The organic mass fraction from sea spray aerosol (SSA) is currently a subject of intense research. The majority of this research is dedicated to measurements in ambient air, although recently a small number of studies have additionally focused on nascent sea spray aerosol. This work presents measurements collected during a five-week cruise in May and June 2017 in the central and western Mediterranean Sea, an oligotrophic marine region with low phytoplankton biomass. Surface seawater was continuously pumped into a bubble bursting apparatus to generate nascent sea spray aerosol. Size distributions were measured with a differential mobility particle sizer (DMPS). Chemical characterization of the submicron aerosol was performed with a time of flight aerosol...

Possible bloom of free trichomes in the Bay of Marseille, NW Mediterranean Sea: an anomaly evidenced by flow cytometry ArchiMer
Zhao, Li; Denis, Michel; Barani, Aude; Beker, Beatriz; Mante, Claude; Xiao, Tian; Gregori, Gerald.
The composition of ultraphytoplankton (10 m) sampled in surface waters (1 m depth) was investigated during summer 2010 in the Bay of Marseille (NW Mediterranean) using flow cytometry. In addition to groups of Synechococcus, Prochlorococcus, picoeukaryotes and nanoeukaryotes, an unidentified additional cluster was observed. The particles forming this cluster had a high abundance (7 10(4) events mL(1)), with both orange and red fluorescence intensities like Synechococcus, but with a size signal larger than that of 2 m fluorospheres (beads). These unknown particles were sorted out by flow cytometry and then observed by epifluorescence microscopy: they appeared to be chain-forming microorganisms, just like trichomes of some diazotroph cyanobacteria with one...

PROTEVS-MED field experiments: very high resolution hydrographic surveys in the Western Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Garreau, Pierre; Dumas, Franck; Louazel, Stephanie; Correard, Stéphanie; Fercocq, Solenn; Le Menn, Marc; Serpette, Alain; Garnier, Valerie; Stegner, Alexandre; Le Vu, Briac; Doglioli, Andrea; Gregori, Gerald.
From 2015 to 2018 four field experiments (seven legs) were performed in the Western Mediterranean basin during winter or early spring. The main objectives were the assessment of high-resolution modeling and the observation of mesoscale structure and associated ageostrophic dynamics. Thanks to the intensive use of a towed vehicle undulating in the upper oceanic layer between 0 and 400 m depth (SeaSoar), a large number of very high resolution hydrographic transects (total length about 10 000 km) were measured, observing mesoscale dynamics (slope current and its instabilities, anticyclonic eddies, submesoscale coherent vortices, frontal dynamics, convection events, strait outflows) and submesoscale processes like stirring, mixed-layer or symmetric...

Seasonal variation of stable isotope ratios of size-fractionated zooplankton in the Bay of Marseille (NW Mediterranean Sea) ArchiMer
Banaru, Daniela; Carlotti, Francois; Barani, Aude; Gregori, Gerald; Neffati, Nada; Harmelin-vivien, Mireille.
Stable isotope ratios of six size fractions of zooplankton (80 to >2000 mm) were analyzed seasonally in 2009-2010 at the SOMLIT site in the Bay of Marseille. Isotopic ratios generally increased with zooplankton size. The highest delta N-15 values were observed in the 1000-2000 mm fraction. The largest size class (>2000 mu m), dominated by gelatinous plankton, had lower delta N-15 values due to the low isotopic signatures of most of these organisms. In the larger size fractions (>1000 mu m), isotopic ratios were measured at the taxon level. Brachyuran, stomatopod, teleost and cephalopod larvae showed the highest delta N-15 values, and salps and pteropods the lowest ones. Lower values of both delta C-13 and delta N-15 were recorded in winter and...
